Teach OREO Writing

Remember, while these topics are fun, it’s important to encourage students to provide reasons and evidence to support their opinions. This helps develop critical thinking skills and strengthens their ability to construct persuasive arguments.

To do this, teach students to write in an OREO!

O: Opinion – Students present their opinion at the start of their writing piece. This statement should be strong and will lead into the rest of their writing.

R: Reasons – Encourage students to provide at least 3 reasons to support their opinions. These should be factually based, so allow them to conduct some research before writing if necessary.

E: Examples – With each reason, students should provide examples as to why this reason supports their original statement. These sentences build upon their reasoning and add meat to their writing.

O: Opinion – In the final sentences of the writing piece, students should restate their opinion in another way to convince the reader. This should again be a strong statement!

Opinion writing allows students to share their beliefs and challenges others to think about important issues. By exploring topics such as the ones listed above, students will begin meaningful discussions that can eventually change the future. Remind students to conduct research when presenting their opinions and support them with strong points. Overall, have fun!!
